What is Directory Virus ?
As the name indicates, a directory virus, also called cluster virus or File System Virus, functions by infecting the directory of your computer. Directory viruses change the path that indicates the locale of a file. When you execute a program file with an extension.EXE or.COM that has been infected by a malware, you are unknowingly running the virus program, while the original file and program are previously moved by the virus. Once infected it becomes impossible to locate the original files. This virus is ” fast infector ”, file infecting virus, and Resident virus type. This virus has properties like “stealth Virus“.
How Directory virus work ?
A directory virus inserts malicious code into a cluster and marks it as allocated in the FAT. This prevents it from being allocated in the future. The virus then saves the first cluster and forces it to target other clusters, indicating each file it wants to infect.it can load various directory pointers that make it look like every program on a disk is infected with the virus, actually, just one copy of the virus exists.
One prominent example of a cluster virus is the Dir-2 virus.
